How your muscle actually works, and why most of your reps build nothing

I am going to teach you the whole system I use. All of it, for free. But none of it will make sense until you understand one thing about your own muscle, so we start there.

Your muscle is not one piece

It is made of thousands of separate bundles, and they are not all the same size. Some are small. Some are large.

The small ones are built to keep going. They switch on easily and they last a long time. They are what is working when you carry the groceries in from the car or walk the dog around the block.

The large ones are built for force. They are the strong ones. They are the ones that grow. And they are the ones you lose as you get older.

Your body will not use the large ones unless it has to

It always starts with the small ones. If the small ones can handle the job, the large ones never come on at all. They sit there.

So if everything in your week is easy enough for the small bundles to manage, your large ones have not been asked to do anything in years.

That is what people are really describing when they say they have lost their strength. The tissue is still on your arm. Nothing has been calling on it.

There are three ways to switch them on

Three. That is the whole thing, and each one leaves something different behind.

Speed. Move a weight you can handle as fast as you can mean it. The weight does not call the large bundles in. The speed does. What you keep is the half second that catches you when you trip. That is the neural end of the dial, and the research calls it power.

Load. Move something genuinely heavy for you, a few times. The small ones cannot budge it, so the large ones come on the instant you pick it up. What you keep is strength.

Time under the weight. Move something in the middle and keep going. The small ones fade, and the large ones come on at the end to finish the set. What you keep is muscle — the shape in shorter sets, the staying power in longer ones.

Which is where almost everybody goes wrong

Getting a large bundle switched on is only half of it. Once it is working, it has to be loaded hard, and how hard it gets loaded depends on how fast it is shortening. A fast rep barely loads a fiber that is working. A slow, grinding rep loads the same fiber heavily.

So a rep only builds muscle when two things are true at the same time. The large bundles are recruited, and the weight is moving slowly enough to load them. Everything else is fatigue, and fatigue costs you recovery and gives you nothing back.

In most gyms nobody finds out which reps were which. There is no way to know.
